16 Months is all it has taken for Crewe's 24 year old Craig Buckley to go from zero to hero in his chosen profession by battering all the competition to be crowned the UK's number one Young Fish Frier of the Year. The former estate agent and business broker has proven he is no flash in the pan when it comes to serving up the Nations favourite meal, having chosen to become a master frier in September 2009. He had to undergo several rounds of judging which included written exams, telephone interviews and in depth visits by industry experts before winning the prestigious award at the National Fish and Chip awards ceremony in London on Thursday. The event - organised by the Seafish Industry Authority and hosted by celebrity restaurant critic Jay Rayner has been running now for 22 years and Craig Plans to celebrate in style during National Chip week next month with his customers.

Over 300 million portions of fish and chips are sold in the UK every year.

It is an industry that employs over 60,000 people and is worth over a billion pounds to the UK economy.

Fish and chips is lower in fat than most other takeaway meals - beating kebabs, Chinese, Indian, burgers and pizza by containing less than 40% of the fat in comparison.

Craig sources all of his fish from sustainable stocks and is strongly against the practice of discard. He actively encourages customers to try different species of fish and has signed up to Hugh Fernley-Whittingstalls fish fight campaign.
